The world’s greatest athletes will converge on Lowestoft this Saturday to compete in the fourth annual World Thumb Wrestling Championships.
As London gears up for the Olympics, Lowestoft is getting set to host its own global sporting event with channel 5 bagging the broadcasting rights to this years event.
2011 Mens’ Champion Luke ‘The Cobra’ Sears from London will return to defend his title, with hotly-tipped challenger Graeme ‘Flash’ Cunningham from Scotland set to give him the match of his life. The Ladies’ Championship is also set to be an explosive event, with thumb wrestling legend and 2009 Champion Jennifer ‘Thumberlina’ Cripps from Norwich aiming to recapture the top spot from 2011 winner Manchie ‘Fancy-a-Thumble’ Kendall from Shipmeadow.
The 2012 Championship promises to be the biggest Thumb Wrestling event yet, with Channel 5′s cameras on hand to follow the fortunes of celebrity contestants Rory McGrath (They Think It’s All Over, Three Men In A Boat) and Will Mellor (Hollyoaks, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps) for their programme, ‘Rory & Will Champions of the World’, due to be screened this summer.
International entries are still coming in as thick and fast as The Cobra’s thumb, with wrestlers coming from as far as Australia, Poland to compete for global thumb bragging rights.
Rory the ringmaster says: ‘This years championships looks like its going to be the biggest yet. As its our 4th year, Olympics time and the summer holidays so we are expecting a very good turn out. We are pleased to be able to hold the event in town again and keep Lowestoft as the worlds mecca for Thumb Wrestling’.
